Interview with Celebrity Hairstylist Ted Gibson

Ok ladies, I’m sure you all know who the fabulous Ted Gibson is. He works his magic on Hollywood’s A-list–Anne Hathaway, Debra Messing and Angelina Jolie to name a few–and he’s one of Oprah’s favs. Ted spent the day in the Total Beauty suite, and we got to chatting…

Glossy: What are some conditioning mistakes women are making?
Ted: Sometimes women think that since their hair is dry they need a protein conditioner and that’s not the case. If the hair is dry they need a moisturizing conditioner, and if the hair is breaking they need a protein conditioner.

G: What are the best moisturizers for hair?
T: Shea butter, wheat protein and silicones. Also, don’t deep condition hair when it’s wet because the water acts a barrier between the conditioner and the hair.
G: Great tip!!

G: Which vitamins will enhance the health of hair?
T: Biotin. It’s the best. You can buy it at any health food store. I recommended it to Anne Hathaway and Renee Zellweger, for example, and they all saw differences in their hair.
G: GNC, here I come!

G: How can women with color-treated hair safely remove product buildup?
T: Use a clarifying shampoo once a week, and a color enhancing shampoo the other times.
(Glossy’s note: Ted’s color-enhancing shampoo has shimmer; I need it!)

G: We love big hair. What are your best tips for volume?
T: A good blow out and perfecting the art of backcombing. Use a fine tooth comb. Backcomb by using downward motions only to create a cushion at the scalp and use hairspray. (Gives demonstration of backcombing on Amber from Beauty Blogging Junkie).

G: Thanks Ted!!
T: You’re welcome!
(We hug) :)
